The Tigers made a flurry of trades ahead of Tuesday's 6 p.m. deadline, the last of them sending outfielder Mark Canha to the Giants. San Francisco sent 21-year-old pitcher Eric Silva to Detroit in return.
Silva is a right-handed reliever in Double-A, where he has a 4.35 ERA in 28 appearances this season. He has 51 strikeouts to 18 walks in 41 1/3 innings. He was drafted by the Giants in 2021 when Tigers president of baseball ops Scott Harris was San Francisco's general manager.
Canha, 35, is a pending free agent after signing a one-year, $11.5 million with the Tigers last winter. He started strong for Detroit this season, but was hitting .231 with a .687 OPS through 93 games.
The Tigers unloaded several veterans ahead of the deadline, also sending starter Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers, and reliever Andrew Chafin and catcher Carson Kelly to the Rangers.
