Ypsilanti native, Eastern Michigan basketball star and former No. 1 recruit in the country Emoni Bates has reportedly been arrested on two counts of gun charges.
Bates, 18, was pulled over in Superior Township Sunday night for blowing through an intersection and was discovered to be carrying a firearm in the ensuing investigation, according to a court filing. The deputies on hand took him into custody and court records show Bates has been charged with two felonies: carrying a concealed weapon and altering ID marks on a weapon.
Once the top basketball recruit in the country in the class of 2021, Bates, who originally committed to Michigan State, transferred to his hometown Eastern Michigan this summer after one season at Memphis, where he averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
“People probably look at me crazy because I’m considering Eastern,” he said in an interview this summer prior to picking the Eagles. “But if I went there, I would be like the neighborhood hero. I used to play at Eastern in my high school games when I was at Lincoln and we used to pack it out every time. That would be crazy for me to be able to bring love to the city.”
