Grant Williams thought the Celtics had a chance to win banner No. 18 in 2022. Then Steph Curry happened.
Game 4 of the 2022 NBA Finals could go down as Steph’s greatest individual performance when it’s all said and done. With his team facing a 2-1 deficit and Draymond Green struggling in front of a hostile Boston crowd at TD Garden, Steph went wild with 43 points to even the series and swing momentum back to Golden State, which eventually won in six games.
On a recent episode of the “Run Your Race” podcast with former NBA player Theo Pinson, former Celtics and current Mavericks guard Grant Williams discussed what it was like to see Steph turn up the intensity on the game’s biggest stage.
WILLIAMS: We get to The Finals, we’re up 2-1, we’re like, ‘Oh s–t, it’s our time. We’re about to go get it,’” Williams said. “Game 4, we’re leading the entire way. We’re like, ‘We get 3-1, we might go back to Golden State and win this.’
PINSON: You know Steph wasn’t having that s–t.
WILLIAMS: Man, Charlotte, North Carolina boys. That man was different. Different, bro. It’s one of those things where I look back at it, like he’s tough.
PINSON: He went nuclear. Bro, you were on the floor with greatness. That was his legacy game.
WILLIAMS: I grew up in Charlotte. I grew up watching and I went to college watching the Warriors-Cleveland Cavaliers (Finals) series.
PINSON: And you were part of that.
WILLIAMS: Part of the losing side of history. But I remember watching it, bro, and he was absurd to watch then. Then I played against him and I was like, ‘He’s different, bro.’
