A new HBO Documentary entitled “38 At The Garden,” produced by a pair of Oscar-winning filmmakers, will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 12, before debuting on HBO and HBO Max later this fall.

The new documentary, per HBO’s release, “chronicles the extraordinary ascendance of point guard Jeremy Lin during his landmark 2012 season with the New York Knicks. Lin, an undrafted Harvard graduate, shocked fans, stunned his teammates and galvanized Asians around the world when he scored 38 points at Madison Square Garden against the Los Angeles Lakers, solidifying Lin’s hot streak and the “Linsanity” craze.”

The doc features a “candid” new interview with Lin, as well as interviews with journalists Lisa Ling and Pablo Torre. A trio of Asian-American comedians also appear to “speak to the cultural impact” of Lin’s success, and former Knicks Iman Shumpert and Tyson Chandler are interviewed about how Lin sparked the Knicks on the court and ignited the city.

In their release on the documentary, HBO also wrote the following about Lin:

“A decade later, Lin’s stature as a groundbreaking, cultural icon stands in stark relief to the recent hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. 38 AT THE GARDEN recognizes a pivotal moment in time for Lin, and celebrates a phenomenon that was bigger than basketball for the world.”

Lin was the first Asian-American of Taiwanese or Chinese descent to play in the NBA, and spent parts of nine seasons in the NBA with eight teams, including both the Knicks and Nets and his hometown Warriors. He became the first Asian-American player to win an NBA title as part of Toronto’s 2019 championship squad, and he spent last season playing for the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association.
