Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones isn't concerned that Dak Prescott has one year left on his contract following this season, which will carry a $59 million cap hit.

The Cowboys can make that cap hit much lower next season should they agree to a contract extension with Prescott before the campaign gets underway, which is expected.

There has been a lot of discussion in the media about the Cowboys potentially costing themselves more money by waiting till the end of Prescott's contract to work out an extension. But Jones isn't worried about the timing of the deal or whether or not it will get done.

“Don’t pay any attention to discussion. It’s meaningless. The only thing that is factual here is what I decide and what we decide as a team and what Dak decides," Jones said Tuesday on Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan. … We know exactly where we are on the contract, years left on the contract and we should be, and are, about as close on that type of communication. … The timing on it remains to be seen.”

Prescott is in the third of the four-year, $160 million contract he signed ahead of the 2021 season. At the time he signed the contract, Prescott was the second-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL behind Patrick Mahomes. Fast forward three years, and Prescott is tied with Matt Stafford and Daniel Jones for 10th among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL in total contract value.

Thanks to those larger contracts that have been handed out, combined with Prescott's MVP-worthy play this season, he's certain to be among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL once again before next season.
