Kevin McGonigle's quick ascent to the majors has come with a massive reward.

The Tigers have signed McGonigle to an eight-year, $150 million extension that begins next year and secures him in Detroit through the 2034 season. The deal includes contract escalators for the final three seasons that could bring the total value to $160 million.

The No. 2 prospect in baseball entering the season, per MLB Pipeline, McGonigle played his way onto the Tigers' roster in spring training and has taken the majors by storm. He's hitting .311 with a .908 OPS and more walks than strikeouts through 17 games. He's also played strong defense at shortstop and third base and has flashed his speed on the bases, most recently when he raced around from first to score the go-ahead run on a double by Dillon Dingler in the Tigers' 2-1 win over the Royals Tuesday night.

McGonigle's new contract covers his final five seasons of club control plus his first three years of free agency. His guaranteed base salaries by year are as follows.
2027: $1 million
2028: $7 million
2029: $16 million
2030: $21 million
2031: $22 million
2032/2033/2034: $23 million

It marks the second time that Scott Harris and the Tigers have committed early to a highly-touted young player. They also signed Colt Keith to a six-year deal worth up to $80 million in 2024, before he had played a single game in the majors. There's risk on both sides -- for the team if the player doesn't develop as expected, for the player if he outperforms the contract -- but the McGonigle deal is both a massive windfall for the player and potentially a major bargain for the Tigers if he stays on his current trajectory.

There are currently 20 MLB shortstops or third baseman with contracts worth at least $20 million per year. The eight highest-paid shortstops average $30.1 million per year, the eight highest-paid third basemen $29.6 million per year. McGonigle's deal averages $18.75 million per year, and he could soon be one of the best among them.

The Pirates recently made a similar move with 19-year-old Konnor Griffin, locking up the No. 1 prospect in baseball entering this season to a nine-year, $140 million extension just a few games into his MLB career.

McGonigle, 21, was a first-round pick of the Tigers (37th overall) in 2023 out of Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast High School in Pennsylvania. Now he's a face of their franchise.
