Looking well-rested coming off their bye week, the Lions ran all over the Chargers in the first half Sunday.
Jahmyr Gibbs posted 72 yards on 10 carries for two scores early on, building on his breakout performance on Monday Night Football against the Raiders.
But the highlight of the half came courtesy of David Montgomery, making his return from a rib injury that had him sidelined since Week 5 against Tampa Bay.
Immediately after the Chargers cut the Lions’ lead to 17-10, Montgomery broke off a 75-yard run, thanks in part to a Jameson Williams block downfield.
The play stood as called after being reviewed, as Montgomery came close to stepping on the sideline.
That put Montgomery at 102 yards on eight carries for the half. As a team, the Lions ran for 177 yards in the first half — Amon-Ra St. Brown racked up the other three on a fourth-down carry.
Detroit’s previous high rushing yard total this season came in their last time out — 222 against the Raiders, of which Gibbs had 152.
It was the second time in the last 10 seasons Detroit put up more than 300 yards in the first half of a game, according to the CBS broadcast.
