After another Mets loss dropped them nine games back of a playoff spot at the end of June, Max Scherzer was asked about reports that he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause in the event that the Mets decide to sell at the trade deadline.
Scherzer is keeping his lips sealed until he hears from ownership that the team is waving the white flag on the season.
“I'll comment when Steve [Cohen] says sell,” Scherzer said. “Until then, it's pointless. It's just clickbait now.
“When he says ‘sell’ - he drives this. So it’s pointless for me to talk about anything in the contract whatsoever. I’m here to show up to win. That’s all I’m here to do, and continue to believe that we’re gonna win.”
Cohen told reporters on Wednesday that he would not be adding at the deadline if the Mets positioning in the standings didn’t improve, and it has only gotten worse in the days since. So, a sell-off is becoming more and more real, but Scherzer will keep quiet until that becomes official.
“I’m not gonna comment on anything,” Scherzer said. “Because otherwise, it’s just clickbait.”
