DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported last weekend that Cowboys' right tackle La'el Collins was suspended for five games after failing to appear for seven drug tests.

The report stated that some of the missed tests were due to "mitigating circumstances," which included days where players were sent home due to a COVID-related matter.

Former Cowboys receiver and Hall of Famer Michael Irvin was asked during his appearance on Shan and RJ Wednesday about the number of tests Collins missed.

"I'm blown away with how you miss seven tests. It's not like, 'hey, we're going to come by and pick up a sample. Oh, don't worry about it, we'll catch you next time.' No, no, no. They stick right there. They don't move. They're waiting. They don't ever let you go away (the testing administrator)," Irvin said. So, I don't know did he get away with missing seven tests. It's insane to me. I don't blame that on him. I blame it on the league. How the hell y'all let him miss seven?"

"Usually, when you miss one that's a positive (test). How did it get to seven? I can't even speak to that, it's just crazy. It's so far beyond anything that I experienced when I was in that program. Trust me, they stuck to me. … They won't even let you practice. Those people wait right there until you come up with that sample. I don't understand how they did that and he was still around this long if he missed seven tests."

Collins' representation is still fighting the five-game suspension.

During his Tuesday morning visit with Shan and RJ, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones described the situation as "very convoluted" and that the appeals process had yet to reach commissioner Roger Goodell, but he did confirm that the 28-year-old will not play this weekend vs the Chargers.

Jones went on to say that Terence Steele will get the start in Collins' place. However, coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday that they'll work through a number of combinations at right tackle this week in practice to determine who will start.
