(WWJ) – The driver of an SUV that was hit by a tour bus carrying a Northern Michigan high school sports team has died.
Michigan State Police officials say the crash happened around 11:15 a.m. Friday as the bus was driving on M-115 near 5th Avenue in Osceola County and encountered a traffic backup that had been caused by a fallen tree blocking most of the roadway.
The bus was carrying students from a sports team at a school in Traverse City, though authorities have not identified the school or sport the team plays.
The bus hit a Buick Enclave, pushing the SUV into a guardrail. The Buick also side-swiped a semi-truck. The bus crossed the centerline and hit the guardrail and an oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the Buick, whose name and age were not released, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
It is not clear what happened in the moments immediately leading up to the crash, which remains under investigation.
Officials did not say whether the team made it to its event.
