Michigan loses top offensive weapon Ronnie Bell to apparent knee injury

Ronnie Bell was having himself a day, until his day was done.

Michigan's senior wide receiver and co-captain was carted to the locker room with an apparent right leg injury after being tackled on a 31-yard punt return in the second quarter of the season-opener Saturday against Western Michigan.

Bell immediately grabbed his right knee when he hit the turf, then had to be helped off the field. He was carted from the sideline to the locker room a few minutes later, visibly upset as he was driven off the field.

It marked the end of what was becoming a terrific day for Michigan's leading receiver each of the past two seasons. Bell hauled in a 76-yard touchdown to put Michigan up 17-7 early in the second quarter, and this came after he delivered a catch-of-the-year candidate that was erased by a questionable offensive pass interference call.

Bell led Michigan in both receptions and yards in 2019 and 2020, totaling 74 catches for 1,149 yards over that span. If he's out for a while, the Wolverines will have a big hole to fill on offense.
