Salaam: 'There's no way Tim Tebow is the third-best tight end on any NFL roster'

Tim Tebow made his widely-anticipated NFL preseason debut at tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars this past weekend, and the former quarterback's performance wasn't short on lowlights.

In the Jaguars' 23-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, Tebow played a total of 16 snaps -- 24-percent of the team's offensive reps -- and went viral on social media after botching a routine block attempt. The 34-year-old was credited with just one target, and didn't register a catch.

"This whole Tebow thing, it doesn't make sense to me," former NFL veteran Ephraim Salaam told the Reiter Than You show on Monday. "I know [Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer and Tebow] have an affinity for each other, they have a relationship. Tebow hasn't been in the league for nine years. The fact that you put him on your roster, you took a camp spot from someone else.

"If Tebow makes this team as a tight end, then they're not on the right page. There's no way Tim Tebow is the third-best tight end on any NFL roster. So, if he makes this team, then it shows me that your priorities may not be in the right position."

Tebow, who signed a one-year minimum deal with the Jaguars back in May, hasn't played a regular season NFL game since 2012. In 35 career games, the former Heisman Trophy winner and first-round pick has completed 173 of 361 pass attempts for 2,422 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also rushed for 989 yards on 197 attempts and scored 12 times.

Tebow is reunited with head coach Urban Meyer, who helped Tebow win a pair of national championships with the Florida Gators during the late 2000s. Jacksonville will trim its roster down to 85 players on Tuesday, and it's unclear whether the quarterback-turned-tight-end will actually survive three rounds of cuts and make the team's final roster.

The Jaguars will open the 2021 regular season on the road against the Houston Texans on Sept. 12. According to the William Hill Sportsbook, Jacksonville currently has the third-best odds (+800) to win the AFC South.
