COVID-19 is already having an impact on the Masters.

Sergio Garcia tweeted on Monday that he is withdrawing from this weekend’s rescheduled tournament at Augusta National after testing positive for coronavirus.

The 40-year-old, who won the Masters in 2017, said he began feeling symptoms driving back from the Houston Open on Saturday and continued to feel them on Sunday and decided to get a test along with his wife, Angela.

Garcia’s test came back positive while his wife tested negative.

It will be the first major championship that Garcia will miss in 21 years since the 1999 U.S. Open, but he expects to compete for the green jacket again in April. Garcia had recently won the Sanderson Farms Championship last month – his first PGA Tour victory since his sudden-death Masters win over Justin Rose in 2017.

The Masters was rescheduled from April to November this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. All individuals – not just golfers -- who will enter the grounds at Augusta will be required to take a COVID test this week.
