In a shocking move, considering how the Steelers normally operate, offensive coordinator Matt Canada has been fired.
Matt Canada fired: Live reaction
The official statement:
Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. I appreciate Matt’s hard work and dedication, and I wish him the best moving forward in his career.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, quarterback coach Mike Sullivan and running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will take over play-calling duties.
Post-Gazette Steelers inside Gerry Dulac reports the decision came from owner Art Rooney II.
The Steelers are coming off one of organization's worse losses in recent memory, falling 13-10 to the Browns in Cleveland.
Canada joined the Steelers as quarterbacks coach after the 2019 season and was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2021 after Randy Fichtner was let go.
Under Canada, the Steelers never got over 400 yards in a game. He worked with Ben Roethlisberger, Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett.
Canada's tenure was heavily criticized with other teams saying they knew what plays were coming when the Steelers has the ball.
Chants of "Fire Canada" broke out during games at Acrisure Stadium, along with at PPG Paints Arena during a Penguins game and even a couple times on ESPN's Pat McAfee show, on location at college campuses.
The Steelers moved Canada out of the booth and onto the sidelines during a Week 9 win against the Tennessee Titans.
It seemed to work a little bit, but Canada's limited playbook reared its ugly head against the Browns.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
