Tigers draft another high-octane arm with third overall pick

Add another arm to the Tigers' rotation of the future.

The club drafted high school pitcher Jackson Jobe third overall on Sunday.

The Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma, Jobe "has one of the quickest arms and the best slider in the draft," according to MLB Pipeline. The 18-year-old right-hander throws a fastball in the mid 90's and features a curveball and changeup as well.

He went 9-0 with a 0.13 ERA and 122 strikeouts versus five walks in his senior season at Heritage Hall High School.

"Jobe repeats his easy delivery and provides plenty of strikes, and his athleticism and efficiency should allow him to remain in the rotation for the long term," says MLB Pipeline.

By the way, Jobe also has potential in the field. While he's a pitcher first, MLB Pipeline notes "he also offers upside as a strong-armed shortstop with bat speed and power potential."

Assuming good health, we can expect to see Jobe in Detroit in four to five years. Matt Manning was the ninth overall pick in 2016 and debuted for the Tigers at the age of 23 last month.

By then, Jobe should be joining a rotation headlined by 2018 first overall pick Casey Mize, plus Manning and Tarik Skubal.

Sunday's draft began with a surprise when the Pirates selected Louisville catcher Henry Davis first overall, while presumptive No. 1 pick shortstop Marcelo Mayer fell to the Red Sox at No. 4.

The Rangers took Vanderbilt pitcher Jack Leiter second overall.
