The Tigers were able to avoid a sweep Sunday afternoon, thanks in large part to a pair of early home runs and a quality start from Alex Faedo.

Faedo held the Padres scoreless through six innings, allowing just one hit as the Tigers went on to win 3-1.

Spencer Torkelson put Detroit on the board with a two-out solo home run in the first inning, his 15th of the season and first at Comerica Park since June 14.

Andy Ibanez added to the Tigers’ early lead with a solo shot of his own in the third, then Kerry Carpenter singled later in the inning to drive in Riley Greene.

A day after putting up 14 runs and forcing the Tigers to turn to a position player on the mound, San Diego’s lone run of the day came on a Gary Sanchez single in the 7th inning.

With rain pouring down in the 9th inning, the Padres threatened with runners on the corners with two outs, but Alex Lange was able to shut the door for his 17th save of the year.
