49ers' Trey Lance to miss 'about 7 days' with 'small chip' in finger

San Francisco 49ers head coach hasn't yet told us what his exact plans are regarding the quarterback duo of Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance as Week 1 draws near, but the most recent update on the situation certainly wasn't one he had in mind.

Shanahan revealed that Lance suffered an injury in his finger in the final game of the preseason against the Las Vegas Raiders that will keep him sidelined for around a week. He's calling the injury a "small chip" that occurred when he had jammed his finger against an opponent's helmet, and explained more about what the actual injury entails.

"It wasn't bothering him much because he just thought it was jammed on that helmet," Shanahan said (h/t David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone). "And then when you get all the images on it — they showed it to me — it's a micro-chip of a bone that's off. He chipped it, which is a small-chip fracture, which is worse than a jam. That's why it's not going to just heal on its own without -- I mean, he can't take snaps and do all that stuff right now, so we've just got to rest it for seven days, they say, and that should be it. [Let] it heal, and hopefully, he'll be good next Monday when we get into practice."

Shanahan also did not expand on which finger was damaged, though it looked from the replay that it was either the thumb or index finger.

This injury likely adds more fuel to the speculation that Garoppolo will be the starter in Week 1, which the quarterback added to himself last week in a press conference.

There's also speculation that they might go with a two-quarterback system, especially after the game with the Raiders, though CBS Sports Radio's Bill Reiter doesn't buy that.
