Nestor Cortes Jr.’s pitching style is best described as “crafty” or “wacky,” but in Brandon Nimmo’s eyes, at least, it may also be “funny.”
Funny because all Nimmo could do was laugh when, in the third inning of Sunday night’s Mets-Yankees Subway Series finale, Cortes went into his windup…then rocked his leg back, almost in a curtsy position, before firing a 75 MPH curveball that swept outside to Nimmo for Ball 2:
Even Alex Rodriguez and Matt Vasgersian were baffled by the delivery, with Vasgersian laughing “what the heck was that?” as ESPN showed a replay.
Nimmo wasn’t laughing on the next pitch, a low 88 MPH fastball that was called a borderline strike, nor was he smiling when he lined out to second base to end a nine-pitch at-bat and the third inning – but hey, at least he had that one moment of levity.
