Will Kenny Golladay be a Giant Week 1?

As you may have heard Brandon Tierney discuss at length on Monday’s solo Tiki & Tierney Show, Kenny Golladay has had what BT called an atrocious, almost disengaged, uninterested summer" in Giants camp.

It’s not just BT that has noticed, either, as head coach Brian Daboll was straight up asked after Sunday’s preseason finale why Golladay was one of the few starters to play in Sunday’s game.

“We were playing all the receivers. I’ve said it's a competitive group, so they're out there competing,” Daboll said. “All of those receivers are competing. And Kenny's had a good camp. Joe (Schoen) and I will sit back, we'll talk about everybody.”

Not exactly a glowing endorsement for Golladay, whose summer as described by BT may have been summed up by this “block” on the first series Sunday:

Daboll would only say “I have to look at the tape,” but whole some other players have defended that as a deke move of sorts, it still doesn’t look great.

Still, the head coach thinks the star receiver has performed as asked this summer, which is about as far as he would go.

“He's done a good job with what we've asked him to do. He's competed, and he's played multiple spots for us,” Daboll said. “He's continuing to learn our offense. I think he's done a good job of learning it. I know numbers and catches and all that, I've got all that, but he's done what we've asked him to do.”

“Numbers and all that” were not great for Golladay last year, who led the team with a paltry 521 receiving yards, and was first in targets with 76 but just fifth with 37 actual catches - and no touchdowns to be had.

And in one last not-so-glowing endorsement, when pressed to follow up on the quote up top and asked if Golladay’s roster spot might be in jeopardy, well, Daboll was once again non-committal.

“I'm just saying I'm not going to commit to anybody being on the roster or not on the roster until I sit down with Joe and have a conversation with Joe,” Daboll said. “I mean we have a lot to talk about at a lot of different positions. That's really not what I meant. I'm just saying in general we have a lot of conversations to have.”

One of those appears to be whether or not Golladay will make it to the second year of the four-year, $72 million deal previous GM Dave Gettleman signed him to last year, or if he’ll be one more bust on the previous regime’s resume.
