LSU trounces Arkansas to clinch series, makes statement in SEC showdown
LSU right fielder Jake Brown hit two home runs and drove in a career-high five runs, Ethan Frey homered and drove in four runs and Anthony Eyanson struck out 11 over six shutout innings as the Tigers trounced the Arkansas Razorbacks 13-3 in 7 innings.
Magic Moment
LSU has struggled to put up runs early in games, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday night against Arkansas starter Gage Wood, who was making his third start since undergoing shoulder surgery. The Tigers erupted for three runs in the first inning thanks to a Jake Brown three-run blast.
Brown also homered in the third inning as the Tigers scored in the first five innings of the game. Brown hasn’t had many at-bats lately, because LSU keeps facing left-handed starters.
But the sophomore from Sulphur took advantage of his start on Saturday and the wind blowing out to right field to hit two homers.
Frey stays hot
Another big game for LSU designated hitter Ethan Frey. The junior from Rosepine was 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Frey also hit his 10th home run and second of the series. In his last six games, Frey is 9-for-17 with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs.
Frey now leads the team in hitting with a .368 batting average and slugging percentage at .711.
Eyanson excellent again
Some might wonder if LSU really has enough to win another national championship. This series is a good example of why they do have enough.
Arkansas has one starting pitcher they can count on, while LSU has least two, and possibly three if Casan Evans goes out and shoves on Sunday like Anthony Eyanson did not on Saturday night.
In Eyanson’s last four starts, he’s allowed four earned runs over 26.2 innings and has struck out 45. That’s nearly two strikeouts an inning.
LSU joins the 40 club
Heading into the series, Arkansas was the only team with 40 wins in college baseball. LSU won its 40th game of the year on Saturday night and the victory probably locked up a Top 8 national seed, as long as LSU doesn’t get swept at South Carolina and fails to win a game at the SEC Tournament.
