LSU vs UNC finale was most-watched regional game in NCAA baseball history

In another sign college baseball continues to grow in popularity, the LSU-North Carolina extra inning thriller on Monday night goes down as the most watched Regional game in history.

ESPN says Game 7 of the Chapel Hill Regional averaged 964,000 viewers. The first meeting of the weekend on Saturday also had a strong viewership with an average of 756,000.

And I’m sure LSU fans also helped produce a strong viewership number on Sunday afternoon as the Tigers-Wofford Terriers game averaged 678,000 viewers, which was more than the averaged 600,000 viewers who tuned into the Texas-Texas A&M Regional on Saturday night in College Station.

A lot of people say the best weekend of the year in sports is the first two rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Millions fill out a bracket and we live to see the upsets.

You can make an argument that the Regional round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is even more exciting. You had six walk off wins on Friday, three more on Saturday.

Unlike the stale atmosphere of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, the baseball tournament is played on college campuses, with crowds that are really into the game.

Moffett Moving On

Sophomore right-hander Aiden Moffett announced on Wednesday he’s entering the transfer portal. Moffett showed potential after pitching in only one game his freshman season.

He made 16 appearances in 2024 and was 0-1 with a 5.60 ERA. Five of the eleven runs he gave up came in LSU’s 12-11 come from behind victory over South Carolina in the SEC Tournament.

Moffett was ranked as the number one right-handed pitcher coming out of Mississippi for the Class of 2022.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Micah Bucknam is also headed into the transfer portal. The Canadian has an ERA of 9.00 in 16 career appearances over two seasons.
