Cam Jordan's NFL rule change request: 'Bring back taunting'

Entering Year 15 with the New Orleans Saints, Cam Jordan has seen a bit of everything.

He also had a very quick answer when he was asked what he'd pick as the "dumbest" rule in the modern NFL.

“For the fans, I think it’s the excessive celebration," Jordan said, speaking on-stage at a Fanatics event alongside actor/comedian Keegan Michael Key and Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz.

"If you don’t let them celebrate, they scored a touchdown, they dragged three defenders on their back, I got a sack on the quarterback, give me 5 seconds.”

The NFL has had several iterations of taunting rule changes, with the most significant coming in 2021 when they cracked down on "taunting," as Cam notes. That year the league announced the rule as a point of emphasis, costing its team 15 yards when called and with the offending player often incurring a fine the following week. Considering that most taunts would come after a big play on either side of the ball, such penalties often had a major impact on the game depending on when they occurred.

The league has lightened its stance on things like post-touchdown celebrations in recent years, while cracking down on "menacing gestures," such as celebrating with finger guns. It's a balance that players like Jordan know too well.

“Let us celebrate," Jordan said. "It’s OK to taunt. Bring back taunting. Let me talk my s***.”

Many of Cam's best celebrations have come at the expense of the Falcons and former QB Matt Ryan, whom he sacked an NFL record 23 times during their NFL careers. Saints fans will certainly be more than happy to watch Cam throw down some extended celebrations if it means more impact plays in the 2025 season. The team gets back on the field for training camp in late July.
