Detillier: 'The retooling of the Saints starts today' with Kellen Moore hire

After a long head coaching search, the New Orleans Saints got their guy in Kellen Moore.

But this is only the first domino in what will likely be a busy offseason of changes, as Mike Detillier broke down Tuesday on SportsTalk.

"We’ll see how the staff shakes out," Detillier said, "and the retooling of the Saints starts today with the hiring of Kellen Moore."

That staff will likely include new faces at the coordinator spots, though popular names include former Chargers coach Brandon Staley and Eagles QB coach Doug Nussmeier as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. GM Mickey Loomis has said previously that the new head coach will be allowed to build their own staff as they see fit.

So far as the question of leadership, though, Detillier sees that as a non-issue.

"Why I think that Kellen Moore is gonna be a leader is I think because of the fact he can communicate and motivate," Detillier said. "He’s been a quarterback in high school. He’s the winningest quarterback in the history of college football at Boise State. His time in the NFL he was a backup, but he was a quarterback there, the team look at you. You’re the leader, come on, if you screw up, they’re not looking at the head coach, they’re looking at you as the quarterback."

Moore, 36, is now the youngest head coach in the NFL, but he does bring six years of offensive coordinator experience split between the Cowboys, Chargers and Eagles. The new coaching era will be tasked with resetting the Saints on a playoff trajectory after four consecutive postseason misses.

The Saints will officially announce Moore in a Thursday press conference.
