Listen: Drew Brees found 'right opportunity' to get back into broadcast booth

Drew Brees' first stint as an NFL broadcaster was short-lived, but he's ready for Round 2.

The legendary Saints QB will join the FOX crew as an analyst alongside Adam Amin on play-by-play, a decision that Brees broke down on WWL Radio this week.

“It’s been something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, just waiting for the right opportunity," Brees said. "I’ve got great relationships with a lot of the networks, had conversations over the years, but really like ... everybody at FOX, had a chance to do some things with them this year specifically. Just really like the culture there, really like the fit, great opportunity."

A foray into broadcasting was always the plan for Brees late in his career, and he immediately jumped into a studio role with NBC upon retiring from the NFL following the 2020 season. He called Notre Dame football games, but only got a handful of NFL assignments, one of which was a Thanksgiving game between the Saints and Bills.

He departed that role following the season, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. Brees spoke briefly about the decision when he was announced as an inductee into the Saints Hall of Fame ahead of the 2024 season, indicating that his long-term goal was to get back into the field.

"I would love to broadcast NFL games at some point again," he said at the time. "I think I could be the best at it."

That again will begin in two weeks, with Brees joining the trio of Tom Brady and Greg Olsen as the top analysts for FOX, taking over the role vacated by Mark Sanchez, who was replaced after an incident and arrest earlier this season in Indianapolis.

Brees doesn't yet know his first assignment, though it will come on Nov. 16 and he expects to largely be assigned to matchups covering the NFC East and NFC North, which follows the network's footprint. And yes, he will be lobbying for at least one specific assignment as the season rolls on.

"I hope I get the Saints along the way this year,” Brees said.
