Hebert: Defense stepped up, and Saints continued to 'whoop' on Giants

Pick a season, pick a week, pick a scenario, the New Orleans Saints always seem to have the Giants' number.

That was certainly the case in Week 5 when the Saints forced five turnovers and dominated the second half in a 26-14 win, their first of the 2025 season. It was the Saints' first time getting in the win column since, you guessed it, their last meeting with the Giants back in Week 14 of the 2024 season.

"You’ve got to take the advantage when you have that opportunity, but I can tell you what, there was nothing giant about the New York football Giants," Bobby Hebert said in his postgame rant. "They were the New York Munchkins, you know like the Wizard of Oz, the munchkins, the New York fighting Munchkins, nothing giant about New York football now, whether it’s the Jets or the Giants.”

But it wasn't always that way. The Giants and rookie QB Jaxson Dart moved the ball at will on their first two possessions, both 8-play drives that ended with touchdown passes to Theo Johnson. That was the last time the Giants would put points on the board in the game, with Dart throwing two interceptions, both to Kool-Aid McKinstry, and losing a fumble. WR Darius Slayton and RB Cam Skattebo also lost fumbles, the latter of which was returned 86 yards by Jordan Howden for a touchdown that all but sealed the result.

The momentum of the game truly swung in the second quarter when Spencer Rattler hit Rashid Shaheed for a 87-yard touchdown, the longest of both players' careers, which cut the lead to 14-13. The Saints would kick a third field goal of the first half to go into the break leading 16-14, and never looked back.

“I’ll tell you what, a big win. We were playing well enough to win ... we were fighting," Hebert continued, "but you don’t get participation trophies, you don’t get no moral victories, you have to win the game and that was outstanding, come away with that win, now we have to build upon that, we’ve got to be opportunistic."

The Saints now turn to host the Patriots with the hopes of getting on a winning streak. it would be the Saints' first back-to-back wins since they took down the Falcons and Browns in Weeks 10 and 11 of last year.
