Hebert: Saints put forth ‘embarrassing’ showing in blowout loss to Seahawks

The New Orleans Saints lost their third consecutive game to start the 2025 season, but the Week 3 result out in Seattle felt different.

The Saints didn’t just lose, they were dominated, punked, beaten down in all three phases of the game in a 44-13 defeat. The Cajun Cannon didn’t hold back in his postgame rant.

"You can’t sugarcoat any of this. No, the Saints suck right now,” Bobby Hebert said. "They are bad. The Saints are bad. Now, what does that mean, bad? I mean, bad is not necessarily, like, going 0-17, bad is when you’re beating yourself.”

It’s harsh, but hard to call unfair, at least based on this week’s result. After back-to-back performances that featured ugly moments but a Saints team that played with pride, fought until the end and gave itself a chance to win, it was clear early on this week that wouldn’t be the case. The Saints were aggressive early on and gave the ball over on downs just past midfield on their opening possession. They had a chance for a big sack, but Sam Darnold evaded Bryan Bresee and found Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a big first down. A few plays later the Saints successfuly stopped a Seahawks third down, but a foolish penalty by Bresee kept the play alive and the Seahawks quickly scored a touchdown.

There were more penalties to derail the Saints next offensive possession, followed by a 95-yard punt return touchdown for Seattle. The next time the Saints punted it was blocked. The Seahawks took over at the 11 and scored two plays later. Barely halfway into the first quarter the Saints trailed 21-0. The game already felt over, and for all intents and purposes it was.

“This is the NFL, pros versus pros. It’s not a mismatch like in college,” Hebert continued. "Man, you can’t get waxed like we got waxed. No, it’s embarrassing.”

The offense struggled. The defense struggled. Special teams struggled. It was yet another week of double-digit penalties (11 for 77 yards), bringing the Saints’ tally to 32 accepted penalties through three weeks. It’s been emphasized and the Saints have had refs at their practices each of the past two weeks. The issues still haven’t been sorted out.

“You’ve got to have some kind of discipline,” Hebert said. "Kellen Moore, I don’t know if you’ve got to chew ‘em out, fine ‘em, whatever, you’ve got to get their attention, but no, we’re worried about fighting after the play instead of fighitng between the whistle.”

Things won’t get any easier for the Saints in Week 4 with another long road trip looming. The Saints will ship up to Buffalo for a showdown with the Bills and reigning MVP Josh Allen, a Super Bowl favorite coming off 10 days of rest. It’s a matchup that, if the Saints don’t get their issues sorted out, could look much the same as an incredibly frustrating afternoon in Seattle.
