Hebert: Saints 2024 season would be at 'rock bottom' if they lose to Panthers

The 2024 Saints season is teetering on the brink of lost at 2-6, but things can always get worse.

At the midpoint of the season the Saints have several of the NFL's most beatable teams left on their schedule. Probably the lowest bar to clear among those teams is the Carolina Panthers team the Saints will face in Week 9 on the road.

"We didn’t hit rock bottom yet," Bobby Hebert said this week on WWL "We lose to Carolina, we hit rock bottom."

It appears the Saints will be getting another crack at Bryce Young, who is 0-3 in his young career against New Orleans. Andy Dalton had taken over, but he's dealing with a thumb injury stemming from a car accident.

"Right now, I don’t think if the Saints had good luck we’d win. We could have a little good luck and we still wouldn’t win. It is that discouraging where we’re at right now," Hebert continued. "Now, Carolina, the Saints are like a 5.5-point favorite. That shows you how sorry Carolina is. We’re going on the road and we’re playing little Bryce who looks like he’s about in 8th grade. I mean, you look at him, I’m glad we’re not playing Andy Dalton. Andy Dalton would have a better chance to upset us than Bryce, I’m telling you right now. So I think, no, we’re gonna hit rock bottom if we don’t beat Carolina."

The Saints could sorely use that result after losing six consecutive games, the longest such streak since 2005 and the final year of the Jim Haslett era. The Saints have fallen hard since a 2-0 start that had them the talk of the NFL, but they should be getting quarterback Derek Carr back this week, which will be a shot in the arm for an offense that's accounted for 10 and 6 points in their last two losses.

“bottom line is you have to win. You have to win," Hebert said, "but it shows you how things can change quickly. ... In three years, look where the Saints are at right now. We’re like, right now, with Jim Haslett. I don’t think we're yet where Mike Ditka is, but I think we’re like Haslett era right now, and that’s unacceptable.”
