Saints ink speedster Rashid Shaheed to $5M extension ahead of training camp
The New Orleans Saints are getting out ahead of things with Rashid Shaheed, much like the speedy wide receiver has done to opposing defenses each of the past two seasons.
The team announced Saturday that it has agreed to terms with the former UDFA out of Weber State on a 1-year contract extension worth $5.2 million. That deal will guarantee his contract for the 2025 season. Shaheed was previously on a 1 year deal worth just shy of $1 million and was scheduled to be a restricted free agent.
The deal splits the difference between the 2024 2nd round tender ($4.89 million) and 1st round tender ($6.8 million). Agreeing ahead of time means the Saints potentially save some money on what would likely be a more expensive deal at that point, and Shaheed gains some security in what would've otherwise been a contract year.
Shaheed's level of play in his first two NFL seasons certainly helped the Saints feel comfortable guaranteeing money this early. The xx-year-old was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler as a return specialist in the 2023 season, a skillset that only becomes more valuable with NFL rule changes intent on bringing kick returns back into the game. But his production as a wide receiver can't go overlooked, with Shaheed developing as one of the game's top deep threats. Shaheed built on an impressive showing as a rookie by hauling in 46 catches for 719 yards and 5 touchdowns. Shaheed's biggest game came in a Week 9 win over the Colts when he caught 3 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown.
Shaheed's role in the offense should continue to expand this season with Klint Kubiak taking over as the offensive coordinator and longtime star Michael Thomas departing this offseason. That WR room is now led by another third-year pro in Chris Olave, with other options including a 2023 draft pick in A.T. Perry as well as veterans Cedrick Wilson and Equanimeous St. Brown.
The Saints open their 2024 training camp on Wednesday (July 24) with their first practice in Irvine, California.
