Saints TE Juwan Johnson needs surgery on injured ankle: report

The New Orleans Saints will have to find some answers at tight end this preseason.

Veteran TE Juwan Johnson will undergo surgery to address a foot injury, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. The news of the injury was first reported by NewOrleans.football.

Johnson went into this year on track to resume his role as the top tight end in the offense, participating in all three OTA sessions. He's been absent for the first two days of minicamp, and is unlikely to be seen for some time. The team is hopeful that he can be ready for the start of the season.

The Saints didn't add any players to the position through the draft, but have worked out several players in the past couple days who could be added to the roster. The Saints also signed UDFA Dallin Holker, who will continue to compete with veteran Foster Moreau and untested players in Tommy Hudson and Michael Jacobson. Taysom Hill's role also includes some tight end responsibilities.

For Johnson the injury is the latest in a disappointing run of health since getting signed to a 2-year extension ahead of the 2023 season. Johnson, 27, appeared in 13 games around an injured calf and his production dipped from the previous season with 37 catches for 368 yards and 4 touchdowns, a majority of which was accrued later in the season.

Johnson joined the Saints as a UDFA ahead of the 2020 season as a wide receiver and was later converted to a tight end.
