These are dark times for chickens.
No, there’s no new COVID strain that only affects chickens. But there is an intense chicken sandwich war burning - or rather, grilling - across the fast food landscape. And now, famed Tex-Mex chain, Chili’s, has jumped into the battle.
According to Yahoo! Finance, starting today the chain will offer the “Chili’s Chicken Sandwich.” It’s a hand-battered, breaded chicken breast topped with a "secret sauce," nestled between a buttered and toasted brioche bun, then topped with a tomato slice, lettuce, and a side of fries.
That doesn’t sound far afield from all the other chicken sandwiches, but Chili’s have already claimed it will “put all other chicken sandwiches to shame." That’s quite a statement coming from a chain that built its name on a Tex-Mex style. That better be some kind of special special sauce, as the chicken sandwich fray boasts some of the most devoted and opinionated fans in all of fast food.
Customers can order the latest creation at a Chili's restaurant location, to-go, or for delivery through their app.
While wondering if the Warhol rule will apply to this chicken sandwich craze, Chili’s press release seems to admit they’re a little late to the game: “We didn’t want to create just another chicken sandwich. We’re all about food perfection and wanted to create the best chicken sandwich, and that takes time.” The sandwich has been in development for over a year.
Chili’s also seems to be aware that Mexican is their main jam, as this new sandwich will only be available until June 30.
That’s not all Chili’s has announced. Chili's is including its reward program, My Chili’s Rewards, in this chicken sandwich launch, though it will survive past June 30.
Chili’s joins (deep breath), Burger King, Taco Bell, McDoanld’s, KFC, Wendy’s, Arby’s, Jimmy John’s, Shake Shack, and even Pringles (huh?!) in the seemingly borderless attempts to out-chicken sandwich the competition.
