Blue Bikes return to New Orleans

Getting around New Orleans will be much easier now that Blue Bikes return.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced Wednesday that Blue Bikes 2.0 is a go and soon the bright blue bikes for rent will return to the many bike stations throughout the city.

“We know that one out of five of our residents do not have access to a vehicle, but even still we are doing away with these emissions,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

Starting September 1, 500 electrically assisted blue bikes will once again fill Blue Bike stations already in place around the city.

“The upcoming launch of Blue Bikes is a major accomplishment in our commitment to improving equity, connectivity, safety, and efficiency in our transportation networks. Bikeshare is a critical component of our transportation system; people rely on it to get to work, and we are excited that 500 bikes will be back on the streets soon," said Cantrell.

People can sign up to ride Blue Bikes by downloading the Blue Bikes Nola app. People can also ride through the $0.15 per minute Pay As You Go option or with a $25 monthly membership. Additionally, through the Blue Bikes for All program, New Orleans residents who qualify for Medicaid or Louisiana Purchase (S/NAP) will be able to access a reduced-price plan of $4 per month. Earlier this year, the City of New Orleans announced plans to relaunch Blue Bikes, the state’s first bikeshare program that operated in New Orleans from 2017-2020.

The program was shuttered in spring 2020 when the previous program operator left the New Orleans market.

Blue Bikes 2.0 is operated under local, community-based control and will give residents, visitors and tourists access to healthy, environmentally-friendly transportation.
