Cantrell projected winner in NOLA mayor's race

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell appears to be cruising to reelection after Saturday's balloting.

"All of the volunteers that stepped up, leaned in relentlessly," Cantrell said in her victory speech, "thank you so much for your hard work."

Cantrell said her administration will continue to work to solve problems rather than "kick them down the road."

"Let's do what this city deserves, because she is world-class, and we are world-class," said Cantrell.

WWL-TV called the election for Cantrell at 9:30 p.m.

Political analyst Ron Faucheux notes that Cantrell is the ninth New Orleans mayor in a row to win reelection.

Helena Moreno is projected winner of New Orleans City Council At-large Division One and Joe Giarrusso is projected to win reelection to City Council District A.

The City Council At-large Division Two seat is a tight contest between Kristin Palmer and J.P. Morell.

Council Districts B, C, D, and E, are projected to be a runoffs, as is the race for Clerk of Criminal District Court and Orleans Parish Sheriff.

Also winning reelection is New Orleans Tax Assessor Erroll Williams.
