Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputy injured in an altercation on the Westbank, transported to UMC

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured in an altercation with a group of people who reportedly were disrupting traffic near a Harvey gas station on Tuesday.

It happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. at Shell gas station on Manhattan Blvd. and Westbank Expressway.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says a sheriff’s deputy responded to a call at the location and got into a hostile altercation with the group of three adults and three juveniles.

He says one of the adults was standing on top of an SUV. Video posted to Facebook shows the officer climbing onto the SUV to remove the man when the two fell off the roof.

"Our sergeant asked him to come down, he refused to come down, our sergeant went up there, during that, a little struggle ensued, and our deputy fell off the top of that van, hitting his head back on the cement."

A person could be heard on the video saying they were "busking", which is the same as street performing for money.

The sheriff said the sergeant was briefly knocked out but was conscious and alert when taken to University Medical Center. The group of six people are in custody said Lopinto.

Authorities closed the Manhattan exit and all exits along the Westbank Expressway as the deputy was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans.
