Newell: Israel needs to take out Hamas just like the US did to its enemies in World War II
Colonel Alex Gan, retired colonel and fighter pilot for the Israeli Air Force, joined WWL's Newell Normand and they discussed this question about the Israel-Hamas war: "Does anyone really believe that Hamas has no clue as to who's alive and who's dead?"
"You know, the old media when I was growing up would have been one of the first. To demand proof of life," Newell said. "They would be hammering that all day long. What do you hear from mainstream media around the world today? Crickets. There's nobody asking for this information. Why is that?"
Whereas in Ukraine, soldiers are fighting while civilians hide underground, in Gaza it's the opposite, he added. Soldiers are hiding underground while civilians suffer from bombings.
"Why is Hamas not allowing the Palestinians to to hide underground with them in the tunnels? So who's sacrificing who?" he asked.
Newell added this: "They're viewed by them as expendable. Does anybody really believe that they give any deference or care at all. Any empathy? Sympathy to the plight of the Palestinian population? Hamas, that is. Well, hell no, because if they did. It would be the reverse, like Ukraine. The Palestinians would be in the tunnels and Hamas would be out there to be allegedly this proud, chest beating warrior that they are the cowards.
"And you don't hear anybody in the mainstream media or the world press calling than that either. They're the big bad ass terrorists. Hiding behind women and children. Hiding in schools. Hiding in hospitals. Hiding in critical infrastructure. Knowing that that creates a level of more difficulty in an urban warfare environment. And where is this Biden administration? Right. I know we don't want you to go to Rafa. Meanwhile, they're firing missiles from Rafa into Israel. Really? You're kidding me. We have to have them fight."
And for Newell, it comes down to one fact, no matter how tough it is, no matter how many college students want to protest about it. You don't negotiate with terrorists. And Hamas is a terrorist organization.
"That's how you fight a war. You fight a war to annihilate and destroy your enemy. Plain and simple. This is not a board game. We are not playing risk. There are lives, there are futures there. Generations that are going to be impacted by what we or anyone allows their enemy to do to them. So what do you do? You take out the enemy. It's what we did in World War II. We made some very difficult decisions there."
