NOPD Superintendent addresses November 6th officer involved shooting

NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson gives an update on the release of body cam video of a Nov. 6 officer-involved shooting.

Chief Ferguson says the incident started with an EMS medical call about a man unresponsive inside a car stopped in the left turning lane at the corner of St. Claude and Franklin Avenue. He says EMS found Dante Frazier, 42, unresponsive and armed with a .22 caliber rifle inside his vehicle.

When EMS personnel woke Frazier, he attempted to drive away. Responding officers then told Frazier to pull over, which, Ferguson says Frazier did but then the situation quickly turned worst and resulted in a shoot-out.

The shooting occurred near a Shell gas station at the corner of St. Claude and Franklin Avenues. When Frazier allegedly tried to run from the scene on foot, officers gave chase and then he opened fire on the officers according to Ferguson.

“This situation unfolded within 52 seconds… from the time that our officers engaged in the interaction… in fleeing our officers… to the last shot being fired,” said Ferguson. “Based on the body-worn camera video that we have obtained thus far… a total of 16 shots were fired by both officers during this encounter. Eleven of the 9mm casings were recovered… our officers' casings have been recovered…we do believe that Mr. Frazier fired as many as nine shots in this encounter.”

Chief Ferguson says Frazier sustained a gunshot wound to the foot and was later found and arrested by NOPD officers.

NOPD will soon release body camera footage of the exchange from one of its officers.
