Puppy fatally shot by NOPD officer responding to noise complaint

A New Orleans police officer shoots and kills a four-month-old puppy while responding to a 911 call at a Lower Garden District home.

The shooting happened in the 1400 block of Felicity Street at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.

According to The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate, the officer was responding to a noise complaint when he entered through the yard’s gate and unexpectedly encountered a large dog and the puppy named Apollo.

The newspaper reports the officer fired his weapon at the dogs, fatally striking the puppy. It is not clear if the officer was attempting to hit the larger dog and mistakenly hit Apollo.

Derek Brown and Julie-Barecki Brown, the dogs’ owners, told the newspaper they had gotten into an argument with each other before hearing the gunshots in their yard.

"I ran out here, and the puppy was right there, writhing,” Brown told the newspaper.

Apollo was featured in a promotional video for Pythian Market’s first puppy wedding aimed to raise money for the rescue organization that helped him get adopted. The NOPD is conducting an internal investigation into the shooting.
