Forecasters with the National Weather Service New Orleans give an update to the tropical depression moving into the Gulf of Mexico.
It is expected to intensify in a short amount of time. Louisiana is currently in the cone of uncertainty; however, forecasters say it is too soon to say where it is going as the storm is disorganized.
The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Depression Nine, located over the west-central Caribbean, is forecast to move into the Gulf and become a hurricane this weekend.
The NWS says it is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico late Friday night.
“And when it does, we may be dealing with a strengthening storm, a tropical storm at that point, turning into a hurricane by the time it gets into the central Gulf and continues off northwest possibly impacting portions of Louisiana, maybe even as far west as east Texas and possibly including the Mississippi-Alabama area,” said NWS New Orleans Meteorologist Kevin Gilmore.
