With the Trump administration continuing its efforts to shrink and restructure the federal government, utilizing mass layoffs in numerous departments and agencies to do so, a new study has found Americans in every field are thinking about job security.
According to a new survey from Clarify Capital, more than a third of all Americans have “layoff anxiety.” The survey also highlighted that when it comes to what workers are prioritizing at their jobs, 69% said job security over growth.
Those who are most likely to experience layoff anxiety are remote workers, and 47% reported worries about losing their jobs in 2025. Compared to in-office employees, that number was doubled, as only 20% of those who work in-person said they worry about layoffs.
Among those worried about layoffs, the survey also noted that a third would take a 10-20% pay cut if it meant they could keep their jobs.
Outside of the federal government, several private sector companies have also decided to trim their staff this year, with a report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas highlighting that 49,800 workers lost their jobs from U.S. companies in January.
Among the most notable companies to recently announce layoffs is Starbucks, which is cutting 1,100 corporate jobs and leaving hundreds of open positions unfilled as it looks to respond to changes in consumer habits and spending that have impacted profits.
Even with major companies cutting back their employees, the survey still found that 3 in 4 Americans would still work at a Fortune 500 company.
