Brooke Huckaby, the 21-year-old mayor of Arabi, Georgia, has made history by being the youngest woman elected as mayor in United States history.
Huckaby, a college student studying agriculture technology, shared her story with “News Nation Live” on Tuesday.
Arabi, a town of about 500 people located 15 miles south of Atlanta, elected Huckaby, whose father was also mayor at one point.
She shared with the media outlet that despite her schooling and part-time job with Georgia’s Department of Agriculture, this felt like the time to step into public service.
“I figured what a better time than now to kind of put my foot in the door,” Huckaby said.
When it comes to what she wants to do in office, Huckaby is prioritizing the establishment of a local police department in the town, which it hasn’t had in about 100 years.
Other priorities on her agenda include community investment and engagement.
Arabi is also home to several agricultural businesses, and having grown up in the industry and now studying it, Huckaby said she leaned into her roots during her campaign.
While she’s already made history, the mayor’s office may not be the last political stop Huckaby has in mind. She shared that a run for governor may one day be in the cards.
“I feel like at the state level, I can still balance everything else in my life,” she said.
