According to multiple new reports, Amazon has informed the White House that it is interested in buying TikTok ahead of the deadline, which requires the app to be sold or face a ban in the United States.
The reports come from the New York Times and CBS News, both of which cited people familiar with the matter.
Amazon has also reportedly submitted a bid for the app as the Trump administration looks to facilitate a sale with the China-based parent company of the social media app ByteDance.
Lawmakers had set the deadline for a TikTok sale on Jan. 19, but Trump extended that for 75 days after being sworn in. Those 75 days come to an end on Saturday, April 5, meaning ByteDance will either have to sell or shut down the app in the U.S.
The Times reported that Amazon sent a letter detailing the offer to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
However, Amazon isn’t the only company that’s interested in the social platform, as CBS News cited a person familiar with AppLovin’s interest in buying the app. AppLovin is a California-based mobile technology company.
As the deadline for ByteDance to make a move approaches, Trump has been asked about extensions TikTok may receive. However, he has said that he would like to see a sale happen.
“We have a lot of potential buyers. There’s a lot of interest in TikTok. The decision is going to be my decision,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One over the weekend, adding he’d “like to see TikTok remain alive.”
For those who need a refresher, the U.S. government is set on TikTok being sold or banned due to what it has described as a national security threat because of the trove of customer data it has.
Members of Congress have expressed concern about manipulation through the platform and the data, which includes browsing patterns, locations, and biometric information, ending up in the hands of the Chinese authorities.
