All Tesla Model 3 cars made from 2017 through 2020 were recalled this month due to rearview cameras that do not function, increasing the risk of crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Additionally, some Tesla Model S cars made from 2014 to 2021 were recalled the same day, Dec. 21., due to a malfunction of the front hood latch that could obscure vision and lead to accidents. Overall 356,309 Model 3 and 119,009 Model S units were impacted by the recall.
To remedy the rearview camera issue plaguing the Model 3 cars, Tesla Service plans to inspect and install guide protectors and new cable harnesses in vehicles as necessary, free of charge. The rearview cable harness may be damaged by opening and closing the trunk lid, which prevents the camera image from displaying.
For the Model S issue – caused by a misaligned trunk latch assembly that prevents a second latch from engaging and puts the vehicles in violation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard – Tesla service plans to inspect and reposition the latch assembly as necessary, free of charge.
Owners of Tesla vehicles impacted by the recall should expect to receive notification letters which are to be mailed Feb. 18.
Apart from the recall, there are hundreds of complaints listed about both the Model 3 and Model S on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site.
As of this week, there were two open investigations regarding the Model 3, one regarding the “passenger play” feature and another regarding 11 incidents where cars on autopilot or cruise control struck emergency responder vehicles. There are eight open investigations regarding the Model S involving: autopilot incidents, desiccated airbag inflator rupture, front fore link failure and loss of rearview camera.
