When it comes to buying candy to pass out on Halloween, do you go with something you like or what you think the kids will want?
If you want to have one of the most popular houses on the block, you might be interested to find out what trick-or-treaters think is the best Halloween candy this year.
A recent Harris Poll asked children ages 8 to 17 which candies are the best and what they are willing to trade to acquire their favorites, in order determine the most valuable common Halloween candy.
According to the survey, the top three Halloween candies are Reese's (19%), Sour Patch Kids (14%), and Snickers (10%).
Favorite, of course, doesn't necessarily insinuate most valuable.
Part of the fun of trick-or-treating happens in the days following when kids trade candies with each other. When it comes to the most valuable candy, Reese's, KitKat and Twix came out on top, with kids willing to trade these only 11% of the time. Meanwhile, candy corn (37%), Dots (32%), and Almond Joys (30%) hold a much lower consumption value as the candies kids are most willing to trade on Halloween.
As for the rest of the "trade candies" -- here's how that shakes down.
On average, kids would trade the following candies X% of the time:
Reese's - 11%
KitKat - 11%
Twix - 11%
Hershey's Milk Chocolate - 12%
Starburst - 12%
M&M's - 13%
Skittles - 14%
Sour Patch Kids - 14%
Snickers - 15%
Crunch - 16%
Milky Way - 17%
Air Heads - 17%
Blow Pop - 17%
Jolly Rancher - 18%
3 Musketeers - 19%
Butterfinger - 19%
Nerds - 19%
Laffy Taffy - 20%
Twizzlers - 22%
Tootsie Roll Pop - 22%
SweeTarts - 23%
Milk Duds - 24%
Dum Dums - 24%
Tootsie Roll - 26%
Whoppers - 26%
Almond Joy - 30%
Dots- 32%
Candy Corn - 34%
These, of course, aren't just even trades. For example, kids would be willing to trade 10 packs of M&M's for one Blow Pop, eight Tootsie Rolls for one Snickers, eight packs of candy corn for one pack of Sour Patch Kids, six Almond Joys for one pack of Skittles, or 10 packs of Dots for one pack of Milk Duds.
So, does it really matter what the kids want? A poll by Instacart shows that among those who plan to give out candy on Halloween, 27% are more likely to consider their own preferences over trick-or-treaters' when buying candy, while 16% are more likely to consider trick-or-treaters' preferences. However, 48% do say they consider both their own and trick-or-treaters' preferences so each party has something to enjoy, the poll shows.
What else factors into the Halloween candy people select? It's all about loyalty -- 23% of people buy the same types of candy every year, according to Instacart. Of those who are candy loyalists, 65% have been buying the same candy for five or more years, and 40% have been buying the same types of Halloween candy for 10 or more years, the poll shows.
