A truck loaded with hamburger buns burst into flames on the interstate in Channahon, Ill., this week.

No injuries have been reported due to the incident.

A preliminary report provided by the Illinois State Police said that ISP Troop 3 responded to the scene -- Interstate 55 southbound at milepost 248 in Will County – just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the vehicle, described by authorities as a semi-trailer, had pulled over to the right shoulder when he realized the trailer was catching fire.

“He unhooked from the trailer and pulled the truck-tractor safely away,” said the ISP. “All lanes were reopened at approximately 12:24 p.m. There is nothing further to report at this time.”

An ABC 7 report identified the vehicle as a Turano bread truck “carrying a load of hamburger buns.” Per the report the cause of the fire was unknown and it created white smoke. Fire extinguishing chemicals were on the roadway after the incident and the driver walked away safely.

According to a 2012 study, “large trucks are involved in only 8% of fatal crashes per year, but 17% of fatal fires.”
