Trump losing his lead over Harris on economy, crime

Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining on former President Donald Trump when it comes to how voters see them handling key issues like the economy and crime.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll from Tuesday, the Republican nominee’s plan for the economy and employment had the support of 43% of registered voters, while his Democratic opponents had 40%.

The latest poll shows Trump’s lead over Harris is dwindling, as in July, when pollsters asked the same question, the former president was ahead by 11 points.

Several factors have played a role in the shrinking lead for Trump, including Harris unveiling her economic agenda two weeks ago and her formally accepting the Democratic nominee.

As for other top issues, both candidates were tied in the public eye when it came to how voters think they will handle crime. While both now sit at 40%, Harris was previously down five points in the July poll.

Despite Harris gaining ground on Trump, both remain largely unpopular in the public’s eye, as 59% of voters reported having an unfavorable view of the former president. Meanwhile, 52% say the same about the vice president.

Still, 47% said they view Harris favorably, compared to Trump’s 39%.

As for the major issues for voters, the economy continues to be a driving factor this election cycle, with 26% saying it was our nation’s top issue. Additionally, 22% said threats to democracy and extremism were their main concern, while 13% said immigration.

Harris (42%) leads Trump (36%) when it comes to how they will handle extremism, while Trump (45%) leads Harris (37%) when it comes to how they will handle immigration.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 23-25 and included responses from 1,028 adults, 902 of whom were registered voters. There is a margin of error of four percentage points.
