NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A politician made one of the biggest fashion statements of the night at the 2021 Met Gala.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of Queens and the Bronx, attended the see-and-be-seen fundraiser for the first time, wearing a white off-the-shoulder gown with "Tax the Rich" splashed in red across the back.
The gown was designed by Aurora James, the founder and creative director of Brooklyn-based Brother Vellies.
“We really started having a conversation about what it means to be a working class women of color at the Met and we said, 'we can’t just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions,'" AOC said at the red carpet of her conversations with James.
James told Vogue before the event that "we can never get too comfortable in our seats at the table."
“We must always continue to push ourselves, push our colleagues, push the culture and push the country forward," James added.
AOC wasn't the only politician to make a political statement at the gala. Her colleague, Congressional Rep. Carolyn Maloney, arrived in a colorful suffragist-inspired gown that called for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment that would guarantee legal gender equality for women and men.
