The hunt for an affordable PlayStation 5 is on, but buyers looking to eBay for their purchase might have to be extra careful. Scammers are targeting PS5 hopefuls by selling images of the new device.

One Twitter user flagged an instance of the scam, showing that the seller was, in fact, selling mere images of the expensive gaming system rather than the actual console.

Unfortunately, this isn't the only instance. Scammers across the platform have been vying for the wallets of those hoping to score a cheap console by listing an image of the device rather than the device itself.

Some have even tried their hand at selling empty cardboard boxes, listed as a PS5 on the website.

According to Eurogamer, eBay has released a statement condemning these fraudulent listings.

"We condemn these opportunistic sellers who are attempting to mislead other users," the statement reads. "We are in the process of removing all listings for photos of PS5s from our marketplace and will be taking appropriate action against the sellers."

"For any purchase, but especially highly priced or in-demand items, buyers should exercise caution and thoroughly read the listing description. Buyers who receive an item which is not as described are entitled to a refund via our eBay Money Back Guarantee, provided they completed the transaction on the eBay platform," the statement concludes.

If getting your hands on a PS5 weren't hard enough, some are having trouble hanging onto their systems even after they've been rightfully purchased.

One man tried to convince his wife that his new gaming console was actually an air purifier. Unfortunately for him, his tactic didn't hold much water, and his wife ultimately sold his device.
