There were 112,437 twin births in the United States in 2020 and the twin birth rate was 31.1 per 1,000 births (3.11% of births), according to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
So it was pretty rare and amazing when a mother from Baker, Louisiana gave birth to her third set of twins in two years, according to WAFB.
Courtney Spears and her husband, Everett Jones, had their third set of twins on May 10. The baby girls, Eva and Camryn, are both doing well and have remained in the NICU since coming into the world.
The couple already had a daughter, Emanie, who is now five-years-old, and then had twin brothers, Ethan and Curtis, in 2020, followed by twin sisters, Emory and Cassidy, in 2021.
Spears was just as surprised as her doctors to find out she was pregnant with twins for a third time.
"I didn't believe it at first, I thought they were showing me something from one of them [previous births]," Spears said. "I thought they were showing me the pictures from one of them, and it was a joke."
Spears told WAFB that "having one kid is tiring but it’s fun," and added that she's ready for the challenge of taking care of seven kids.
"It’s fun, it's tiring, of course, having one kid is tiring but it's fun," Spears said. "They make us laugh. Just seeing the different things they do every day, every day it’s something new. They make us laugh a lot."
She also told the news station that she had a preterm labor scare, forcing her to stop working earlier than expected. Because of that, the couple is continuing to look for a big enough car and car seats for all seven kids.
Spears was asked if the couple is done having more children, and she laughed in response.
"Oh yeah, we have a no touching policy, just until we can be sure," Spears said.
