As movie theaters slowly star opening across the country, some screenings are being canceled for reasons other than COVID.
A theater in Portland, Oregon has called off an upcoming screening of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1990 comedy "Kindergarten Cop" after complaints that the flick "romanticizes over-policing."
The Northwest Film Center was set to screen the film shot in Astoria as part of its summer drive-in series "for its importance in Oregon filmmaking history", but then Portland author Lois Leveen fired off a bunch of since-privated tweets saying the movie's depiction of police in schools perpetuates systemic racism.
"Criminalizing of children increases dramatically when cops work in schools. Yes, KINDERGARTEN COP is only a movie. So are BIRTH OF A NATION and GONE WITH THE WIND, but we recognize films like those are not 'good family fun.'"
Arnold Schwarzenegger has yet to comment on the matter.
