It's that time once again to GET REAL.. This week's topic - SPELLING SOMEONE'S NAME CORRECTLY.
You would think it wouldn't be difficult to double check that you're spelling someone's name right, but apparently it is.
My name is KRISTEN. Seven letters, pretty simple, easy enough right..? WRONG. You would swear my name is the most complicated name under the sun! I've gotten Christen, Kristin, Christin, Christine and once in a while, Christian. Yup, I'm not kidding.. I will get CHRISTIAN. A boy's name. Tell me how that looks like KRISTEN. And especially with a last name like BUCCIGROSSI, the idea that KRISTEN is the name you're misspelling BLOWS MY MIND!
I'm not going to lie, I almost cried one time when I went to a Starbucks and the employee asked how I spelled it. YOU'RE AN ANGEL WITH CAFFEINE STARBUCKS EMPLOYEE!
Okay enough with the dramatics.. I get it. People are in a hurry, they don't have time to double check the spelling, or care to double check the spelling, but when it comes down to being respectful of the other person, you should check how their name is spelled! Especially if this is your first interaction with them and you want someone to date you, buy something from you or take you seriously in the work place, you should make sure you're not misspelling their name!
When it comes down to it, it's all about respect.
I know you might think I'm crazy (probably because you have an easy name), but it's a HUGE sign of disrespect. It's a sign that it's all about what YOU want from them, not so much about what their needs are. It's not that hard to take that extra minute out of your busy schedule and double check to make sure their name is spelled correctly, otherwise every response email that you're going to get from this person is going to have their 'signature' attached to it. Yup, there is a reason for that. It's not just the way their email is set up, it's a subtle YOU SCREWED UP AND I'M MAKING IT KNOWN UNTIL YOU REALIZE HOW MY NAME IS REALLY SPELLED.
Moral of the story: Take time and show someone respect by making sure that you're spelling their name correctly! It is GREATLY appreciated by those who have their name misspelled all the time!
