With a new baby boy on the way, Granger Smith and his wife Amber are looking ahead at new beginnings while also always keeping their late son, River, in their hearts and minds.
Smith and Amber are expecting their baby boy in August. However, during a conversation with People Granger shares that River is still “very alive in our everyday life.” In June of 2019, the Country artist’s son tragically passed away due to a drowning accident at home.
For Granger and Amber’s son Lincoln, 7, and daughter London, 9, their late brother is talked about in regular conversation, and stories are shared about him with friends and neighbors.
The parents share that they are still grieving, and feel that the process will always be present in their lives in some way. However, they are also celebrating the addition of the newest member of their family, who will arrive this summer.
Amber and Granger also share details about this pregnancy and undergoing in vitro fertilization. River was planned to be the couple’s last child and Amber underwent having her tubes tied after he was born. But the parent’s ideas changed when Granger realized he had “extra love to give as a father,” and when they learned that IVF treatment was an option around Amber’s irreversible procedure.
Unfortunately, the husband and wife faced tragedy again when Amber miscarried the first two viable embryos from the IVF treatment. Amber shares, “I have had friends who have gone through miscarriages and it's one of those things that until you go through it, you have no idea... what that pain is, not only emotionally but physically.” She adds, “I had no idea of the pain you go through for hours."
“And sometimes it takes days or weeks. I just have a whole new respect and compassion for women who experience this. And it's so much more common than we know of."
Granger and Amber’s second embryo stuck and the duo was able to tell their kids about the pregnancy. The parents did not tell their kids about the miscarriages that occurred in Amber’s first trimester.
Smith shares, “Then they got excited all over again,” and Amber interjects, “They're so excited. Lincoln kisses my belly every morning and always says goodbye whenever he goes to school. London is excited, too, but Lincoln just can't wait for a little brother."
The “Buy A Boy A Baseball” singer says, “We really needed a fresh start,” in regards to moving to a new home just before the arrival of their baby boy. “We didn't need to forget anything — we just needed a new change of pace where we're really reestablishing new roots on a new piece of land with some new neighbors, a new grocery store, and a new way to work. And getting us out of the rut that it's easy to get into, especially after tragedy, where you start driving the same road and you start thinking the same thoughts and you kind of get sucked into the same path."
Smith’s wife says, “We didn't want to stay stuck in our grief where we couldn't grow as people and be the best parents that we can be for London and Lincoln. And while this is, like Granger said, never going to be a replacement, we're doing the best that we can moving forward carrying what we have to carry in this new road that we're walking."
Smith also premiered his new video for "Hate You Like I Love You" earlier this week. Watch the clip below.
